Fifth Day of Critmas

Fifth Day of Critmas

On the fifth day of Critmas, my players got from me, five glowing shrooms!
four lichen knights,
three molding sprites,
two seedling sprouts,
and a Myconid with spores all around.

Artist: Brian Valeza – Myconid Spore Tender – MtG

Quick Description

At first I thought of using the myconid with the staff, like the card from Magic the Gathering. Then I thought, wouldn’t it be fun if it were the little guys he is gardening. Also I realized how much like Flumphs those things looked like and Glowing Flumphshrooms they became. As I was working on it, Flumphs were just not hitting right; at CR 1/8, they don’t quite capture the threat or vibe I wanted. To amp things up, I decided to combine both Flumphs and Red Slaads.

Reskin Details

  • Original Creature: Flumph, CR 1/8 and Red Slaad, CR 5
  • Both Creatures: Change the creature type from Aberration to Plant, though this is one of the scenarios where Aberration would still work.
  • Flumph Changes: None.
  • Red Slaad Changes: The core abilities remain intact, but a few adjustments bring it in line with the glowing mushroom theme.
    • Reduce Speed to 5 ft. Add: fly 30 ft.
    • Add the Flumph’s Prone Deficiency trait.
    • The Bite attack originates from an octopus-like mouth at the underside of the mushroom’s stem, while the Claw attack comes from writhing tendrils that lash out at enemies.
    • Claw Instead of a Slaad Tadpole, victims are infected with one of these parasitic Flumphshroom, which slowly takes root within them..

DM Tips

  • You could have this as a field of glowing mushrooms that suddenly lift into the air. It all looks incredibly magical until it becomes horrific as the little buggers swarm the characters.
  • Perhaps these creatures guard a sacred grove, lying in wait for unsuspecting adventurers who mistake them for harmless fungi.

Let it glow, let it glow, let it glow; it’s critmas time still tomorrow. Come see whats next!
