Ninth Day of Critmas

Ninth Day of Critmas

On the ninth day of Critmas, my players got from me, nine puffballs choking,
eight mosses shambling,
seven yeasts a-creeping,
six morels budding,
five glowing shrooms!
four lichen knights,
three molding sprites,
two seedling sprouts,
and a Myconid with spores all around.

Quick Description

This creature’s eyes make them look like it’s “seen some s#!+”. The bent curve of the staff adds to the eerie vibe, this Myconid is a perfect candidate for a mental control creature. It screamed Mind Flayer. Had to be. The tentacles are reimagined as either spore-laden appendages sprouting from its body or the pink glowing strands seen in the image, or both. Perhaps when the attack is used the strands flairout and engorge with spores making them more anemorphous. When they use their ‘mind’ blast, they eject a puff (cone) of spores that cloud the targets mind. Still psychic effects, just a different look. I love the idea that this creature never really looks at you, just in your direction.

Reskin Details

  • Original Creature: Mind Flayer CR 7
  • Changes: All changes are purely cosmetic, reimagining its abilities as spore-based while keeping the Mind Flayer mechanics intact.

DM Tips

  • Haha, what if these creatures are actually shepherds for the shambling mosses from yesterday? It’s a fun twist!
  • Perhaps the party encounters these Myconid Mind Flayers leading a group of Shambling Mosses, protecting them from intruders—or using them to overrun a nearby settlement.

Puffballs Roasting in the Open Mire, mushrooms grow between your toes. Tomorrow brings Day 10 come and see.
