On the tenth day of Critmas, my players got from me, ten blooms a-bursting,
nine puffballs choking,
eight mosses shambling,
seven yeasts a-creeping,
six morels budding,
five glowing shrooms!
four lichen knights,
three molding sprites,
two seedling sprouts,
and a Myconid with spores all around.
Quick Description
While Baldur’s Gate 3 gave the Bulette a bit of a revival, it remains an underutilized creature in D&D. When I saw this picture floating around the interwebs, I immediately thought, ‘Ooooo, Bulette!’ The longer it stayed in my queue, the more I realized how terrifying this creature could be. Made of lichen, fungus, and morels? Absolutely horrifying. Let’s lean into that horror and reskin it using the Remorhaz for a truly nightmarish fungal beast. This Bloom Burst hides in underbrush rather than ice fields. As its prey draws near, it bursts from the blooms toward its next meal.
Reskin Details
- Original Creature: Remorhaz CR 11
- Changes: Only small changes with this creature so it aligns with our theme.
- Change the creature type from Monstrosity to Plant.
- instead of a Heated Body I would give it a Toxic Body. The damage changes from fire to poison, reflecting its fungal nature.
- The Bite action is similarly adjusted, replacing the extra fire damage with acid damage
DM Tips
- This creature could be hunted by the morels as part of a coming-of-age ritual, or perhaps it preys on them, forcing them to stay away.
- Maybe this creature is used as a war beast, much like elephants. Only trained riders or members of a specific Myconid clan can handle them due to their toxic skin.
- Imagine the party trekking through a dense, flower-filled jungle when this fungal beast erupts from the underbrush, scattering blooms in its wake as it lunges to attack.
Oh Bloom All Ye Faithful, tomorrow’s day eleven, oh come ye, oh come ye, to see what I wrote.
